I am pretty sure it has to do with the closed ecosystem. Android is the Wild West when it comes to what google will allow to be published. Apple is more selective. Makes for a less dynamic experience but fewer threats. If anyone has physical access your phone is compromised.

I do think Apple locks down their devices really hard, for the sake of security. Issue is that`s encouraging bad practices. Thats why events like the fappaning happen. If your not willing to be secure, no amount of security walls will protect you from your own stupidity.

Apple always allowed apps before the Mac App Store existed. They have went to great lengths to mitigate against malware and of course there is now the Mac App Store. With iOS they had a new system so could protect people from the start. Its worked very well.
