Sony announces impressive increase in smartphone salesOctober 31, 2013, 5:17 pm Even though it appeared as Sony would miss the smartphone game, the Japanese pioneer has hugely improved its smartphone range and has increased its handheld sales quite dramatically during the last quarter. The hi-tech maker has announced that in Q3 has had increased smartphone sales by 39.3 percent compared to the same period last year. There are some impressive figures there, for sure, yet not everything was so good for Sony this last quarter. The company has already cut its annual profit expectations down to 30 billion yen (or $300 million). This is a pretty big decrease actually, since Sony was initially forecasting a 50 billion yen profit. The 40% decrease is mostly blamed on Sony`s movie department. On the other hand, the increased sales of smartphones and tablets worldwide, mean less camera sales for manufacturers, so Sony`s cameras sold 6.9 percent less than last year`s quarter, with the imaging arm reporting a total loss of $24 million. Sony`s own image sensors and components are still profitable though, since the smartphone and tablets sell so good these days, making an operating income of $122 million for Q2 2013. On a different front, TV-set sales were up, but still Sony lost $123 million from that division in the last quarter. Sadly, Sony`s gaming department also made a loss of $8 million, even if the company managed to sell 2 million new PS3s in the last quarter. With the PlayStation 4 just ahead of us though, the gaming department of Sony is expected to be much more profitable in the next quarter. |
