[POLL] iOS developers: What is the minimum version ofJune 23, 2021, 2:27 pm [POLL] iOS developers: What is the minimum version of iOS are you planning to support once iOS 15 comes out this fall? Would also love to hear reasons why in the replies! Current - 2 for a little bit for mobile apps. Probably current - 3 for SDKs. Unfortunately for bigger companies it almost always comes down to percent of user base still on OS versions. 5% of 10M MAU is a *lot* of users to just say bye to. We just dropped 12 so 15 is well not gonna happen for a while We still have a customer base on iOS 12 (iPhone 6 and lower). I really don`t care about iOS 13 - 14, because all those devices can be upgraded Probably 15 but what makes me a little hesitant is this new policy of letting people stay on iOS 14 with security updates which may not make a difference We have current and previous version support at work and a 6month support for -2 then we drop it and customers have time to update. For my own projects current versions always iOS 15 for many reasons. First, for new apps, I dont want to start with technical dept: its a real cost. iOS 14 has become most used iOS in 6 weeks, adopted by 80 % users in 3 months only. Previous versions of apps remains available on App Store. I`ll probably bump to iOS 15 rather quick for my own apps. They don`t have a huge user base and they`re free so IMO there isn`t much reason to stick with 14 for a long time. 13, because of our user base. iOS 12 as many people still use older iPhones. ThirdWorldProblems The company I work for has an SDK that other apps use and we support as far back as is practical... we support iOS 11.4 min but also add in support for new iOS features as they come out, which we can then emulate to some degree for older iOS versions. Well be going from 10 to 13 mostly because 13 has a lot of good shit 15 for a new app, 12 for an old app that still has 12.x users early days iOS is low and looks like many here are discarding update rate of iPad users which is lower. Last 2 OS isn`t enough. Due to iPad user ( even if ur app is iOS only ) Last 3 OS for first 6 months or release should be considered. If adoption is above 90% we can consider 15: Im a hobbyist so adopting new techs keeps it fun and I dont have much of a user base to worry about 14+ in my clients app. 15+ in my own I support a large number of teachers that use whatever they can get a hold of. Its amazing how far back some districts keep their devices. Yes I just want to have a lot of faith in the version that I am going to lock my iOS 14 users on in terms of stability et cetera, haha. iOS 14 as the users who update get the new features. More than 1 year delay, is weighing the old users to high, in my opinion. I usually drop the previous years release once about 90% of my new downloads are coming from the new OS. This year I did that and still saw about a 15% drop in new downloads. Maybe theres a bit of a compound effect by lower downloads dropping you in the keyword rankings? I plan to go to iOS 14 when iOS 15 launches, but might make the move to iOS 15 before iOS 16 if that makes sense? My current app has iOS 13, so Ill keep that for now. My next app to be released this summer will be iOS 14, and my third app in the fall will be iOS 15 only (wanna make use of all the awesome new features in Swift and SwiftUI) Jobby-job app will be iOS 14 and up after 6 months have passed since the official release of iOS 15. My personal apps will be iOS 15 only right away. Uptake is quick, and iOS 15 reduces the amount of work you have to do, and the quality of the results. Ha ha. True. But we are trying to get new features in the hands of more people. Worst case scenario, we have the force update switch. For now, apart from the inability to use SwiftUI (which we arent so familiar with), were not missing anything. You got it! Sadly they dont think about us poor developers while bolting an iPad onto the wall Right now we are supporting iOS 12, but we are dropping it next week (its 0,55% of our users but 30% of the development time). After that, all iPhones that can install iOS 13 can also install iOS 15 and we will force iOS 14 only by November and (I hope) iOS 15 by March 2022 A small backend in which you can set rules for the iOS-version and app version for example, so that you could show a message to all users on iOS 10-12 for example, or a specific app version, for example. Or push updates voluntarily or mandatory. We make apps to control audio hardware. A whoooooole lot of old iPads stuck on iOS 12. Currently working on a side project. Its not released yet so iOS 15 is perfect. For my day job, still cant drop iOS 12 I think iOS 15 needs to be out for at least 6 months before we should fully target it if my parents are to teach me anything, it takes most people a while to update. Usually current - 1 but I don`t do that cut off until a current.2 is out for the current. Basically holding out on bumping min iOS because I`m waiting for version blocking integration, so I can more easily inform customers that we won`t support iOS 10-11-12-13 anymore soon. Im going with 14, even though any device that can do 14 can do 15. Just because I dont want to force people to update right away. Ill keep an eye out early next year, and when my user percentage is down low enough on 14, then Ill likely jump to 15. a very small percentage of our users were on ios 13 so we have already dropped it. very happy apple hasnt dropped any phones with ios 15 but were going to wait to drop 14 15. Adoption of new versions is pretty good and all devices are still supported. My answered is based on private projects, assuming Ill actually get around to execute them. At the job its still iOS 12 with a plan to drop it once the revenue it generates drops a bit. |
