People dunking on Apple`s ProMotion (aka 120Hz dynamic refreshSeptember 24, 2021, 6:01 am People dunking on Apples ProMotion (aka 120Hz dynamic refresh rate) on iPhone 13 Pro should calm down a bit. Yes, many Android devices had high refresh rate displays for many years, but real dynamic refresh rate only really started to happen last year (Note 20 ultra / Z Fold 2) When a screen with dynamic rr is used, it MUST be seamless. Almost every android limit rr in some circumstances. I can`t really stand that microstutters happening all around so just lock it in max hz. I haven`t tried iPhone 13 series yet but quite excited for their management Now that I reminded myself I`ve done this to all my Android phones, I think I found the reason why my Z Fold 2 has pretty bad battery life LMAO + In Android, the apps, especially the ones that use cross platform frameworks, are not perfectly capable of pushing frames that fast. There are often janks/flickers which harm the experience. And the heuristics to optimize when to switch to high refresh is not yet standardized. iPhone 13 Pro has ProMotion while the regular iPhone 13 and 13 Mini still stuck with PovertyMotion lol Maniacs like me would happily trade battery life over refresh rate (I actually lock all my Android devices to max frame rate). But this is Apple were talking about. It makes perfect sense for them to wait for dynamic frame rate tech to mature before introducing 120Hz to iPhones. So, iPhones really are just late to the party for about a year. And actually, Apple is one of the pioneers of dynamic high refresh rate displays on consumer electronic devices. They introduced ProMotion on iPad Pro in 2017, before the first 120Hz Android phone, Razor Phone 1. The actual technical barrier is LTPO OLED panels. Without it, smoothly switching between frame rates is proven to be challenging for OLED (see link). There were reports about Apples inability to adopt ProMotion is due to Samsung not producing enough LTPOs |
