Parenting question - my son (5) loves reading but
Parenting question - my son (5) loves reading but doesn`t want to write, so his handwriting is out of practice... any good games or techniques to get him to actively want to write?

Hmm. You dont use handwriting in the game Scribblenauts but you DO write in words and sentences through text that solve problems in unique ways. Maybe if he sees how his text input can impact a story, he might want to write his own stories (hopefully) through hand writing? IDK

Does he like to draw? I know when I was a kid, I hated writing (because my penmanship was terrible and it was terrible because I didn`t write) but when I got into calligraphy, which felt more like drawing, I saw my penmanship improve quite a bit. Just had to change my mindset.

I had my kid try and write with the off hand and then write with her dominant hand as a game to see how good she could do with both.

You can check out Writing Wizard. Its an app on at least ios. Not sure about android. We use it for the kids I work with.

So Ive been dealing with kids for the past 5 years and the best way to get them to practice writing is writing alongside them. So have a sentence or whatever and write each word together. Or tracing papers you get online so he can practice how to write stories so you can read.

Tell him to write a story. Tell him he can write a story about anything he likes, and he can draw pictures to go with it.

My advice? Get him a literal pen pal, like we had as kids. If you didn`t ever have one, the basic idea is you swap letters with a pen pal overseas, kind of like texting

I`m not a teacher or a parent, but I`m one of those people that struggles to learn a skill of it doesn`t have any practical use. Like he said "there is no point." And realistically with everything being digital writing on paper has very limited uses outside of school anymore ->

maybe a roll and write game, or a TTRPG? that`d combine a bonding excersize with creating a fun story and writing down details, i`m sure there are a few simplified games for younger audiences out there

Not perfectly in handwriting, but the DS games "Lost Magic" give a bonus for writing the symbols used to cast the magic well, maybe that could be a gateway?

Our son is a bit older, but he doesn`t get his allocated IPad time until he has written ten sentences. Sentence starters help! You probably know this, but boys` fine motor skills take a while to develop, so they find it a bit trickier.

Have you considered having him write letters to real people? Maybe have a grandparent or relative mail him a letter, and then it becomes an experience about learning how to write a letter and mail it like grown-ups do.

Honestly Im the opposite I enjoy writing but that mainly because I enjoy storytelling and required writing never appealed to me ever I have multiple forty+ page short stories because I want to tell a story if you can find a way to make it may help to improve his penmanship a bit

Youve probably already seen these but here are some ideas. We got our four year old some peppa pig books which has erasable sheets with tracing lines for learning numbers (not sure if is helps, I`m very tired), I think they were on Amazon, ad-libs? or games like boggle? only really 1 word at a time but its all i can think of right now

well, my mom would always give me like... prizes if i could write a sentence to her approval. not anything big, something like a small candy or a little trinket

Whats he keen on? Sometimes pairing learning with your childs favorite sport, activity, game helps.
