Never take seriously those who ridicule lower income people
Never take seriously those who ridicule lower income people for having an iPhone or laptop. "If they`re so poor how did they buy an iPhone???" Because they`re trying to escape poverty, not the 1700s, you fool. If you think they`re luxuries, go ahead, survive a month w/o them.

Also, when you finance your phone (or take advantage of deals), they`re free. I often move phone carriers to get "bought out" and not pay my for my phones when I need a new one because I can`t afford a phone otherwise.

A smartphone is a necessity today. Employers expect you to have one, to use at work. And they don`t expect to provide them to you.

One thing I see over and over concerning the conservative or right-leaning mind is generalization from a single data point. One bad example ruins the whole group, category or organization.

I have a moto 4 that costs under $200 and no problems in the last two years. I could afford an iphone but why pay more.

yeah but most people dont need to spend $1200 on a phone that can do everything a $100 phone can lol...the only difference is the one thats 12x more expensive isnt as fancy or as powerful

What Qasim said. What version iPhone? I cant even get $20 on a trade in for a phone two years old! People acting like homeless people are waiting in line on release.

There is also things called saving, leasing, and getting a gift. Also there is renters rebate (Once a year I get between $600-$700 from doing it)

Also, theres plenty of old ones floating around.

I think your argument is served better saying mobile phone. I couldnt afford an iPhone for years but had a perfectly functioning/far cheaper mobile for a fraction of the cost. Some things are luxuries due to branding. There can be common sense in good faith leftist politics.

Have people forgotten that some poor people have relatives who might be a bit less poor and may give them gifts? Or that some people are newly poor and may have a phone back from when they weren`t poor?

Tracfone Smartphones can be used for as little as $15 a month. No television or cable but instead the free use of a-library loan system- priceless! Priorities brother, priorities!

If u believe for a minute that phones an internet service are not utilities u r lying.

My mom always says not to cheap out on things between your body and the ground. Shoes, mattress, etc. Your body will thank you later.

I have used iPhones for at least a decade and NEVER paid for a new one. Had several hand me downs or bought refurbished. People dont know shit about other peoples lives.

You need a phone, and email and internet to be able to apply for a job (2 of the 3 coast money (the 3rd can also)) , and many jobs out there dont even cover rent

In Australia you have to sign in to Covid tracking using a phone that can read QR codes and link to the internet. Like theres no expectation that everyone in the country cant do that

An iPhone is a luxury. No poor person needs a $700+ phone. Thats a bad financial decision. There are many cheaper options

"Their kids wear nikes" Yeah?...they want their kids to blend in and not feel the weight of the family`s money issues...how horrible

iPhones are $1000-2000 phones. Regular mobile phones are $19.99-$50. And laptops? I guess I`m less bothered by those.

Places like metro and cricket you can get a free phone with new service. Unlimited everything service for 4 phones for my family only cost me 115 a month. That also includes 15gb of hot spot per phone. To me that`s a good deal.

iPhones are overpriced garbage built by Asian slaves. I`m confused by your tweet.

I own 5 Coach purses. I bought 1 at a Super Clearance sale for like $35. Usually, I bought cheap purses that fell apart quickly. My actually rich friend gifted me the other 4. I make less $25,000 a year working with SpecEd students. In the last 7 years, I bought that 1 purse.

An iPhone is evidence of a mind easily distracted, fooled&willing to pay more for less as long as they`re in a cult. I`ve been writing software since 1979, run 200 domains, authored 30K+ webpages&owned 3 big computer stores;. Get a $25-$65 Android or learn to say "Doh!" a lot.

In the show Sense8, a bit of truth, a smart TV in a poor hut without a bed helps "take you out (into the world). A bed keeps you in your poverty." Same is true for a lot of other things!

Ive donated my used cellphones to Veterans, and victims of abuse. I dont understand how anyone feels they have the right to criticize people that are going through financial strife. People like that have a deep down ugliness. Leave it with them! Laugh them off.

Exactly. Smart phones are imperitive for homeless to find shelter, apply for jobs, and maintain any connections with family/support. It is NOT a status symbol but a survival tool.

Monthly payments for an iPhone for 24 mos makes it pretty easy for low income people to afford one.

Your childhood must have been bad.

Do they think phones cost a million dollars or something? You can buy a brand new smartphone (Android at least) for under $200. And some are as low as $50 or less. And what is it with them and their "if you`re poor, you`re not allowed to spend money on anything but bills."

Cell phone companies will resell trade-ins at a lower price than a newer model.

They could be a gift from family or friends. Free phones are available for disabled through govt programs. I assisted a deaf friend in obtain ing one to send/receive texts & calls with captions. Some areas offer text to 911. Amazing how judgemental ppl can be

both have become necessities over the last decade, and as far as cell phones, they either come with a mobile plan or can get one for like $20 a month extra until it`s paid off.

The point is, poverty typically means you are starving. If you are choosing between Instagram and food for your kids, you might need to re-adjust your priorities. Is our measure of poverty that is broken, not the people calling it out.

iPhone 12 Pro (2020) $999. iPhone 12 Pro Max (2020) $1099. According to eHealthInsurance, for unsubsidized customers 2016, premiums for individual coverage averaged $321 per month while premiums for family plans averaged $833 per month.

Mine have all been gifts.

When we moved here, neither one of us had ever had cell phones. We got the cheapest Nokias and managed with T9 and public library Internet with our existing laptops for months. When we upgraded one of the phones to a smartphone it was life changing.

Thats todays version of theyre on WIC why do they also have ice cream sandwiches in their cart as if people of limited means dont also deserve treats!!

Used to hear this at the store all the time from people in line - someone using a LINK account had a phone or a purse that was too nice and customers behind them just could NOT mind their own business.

He said the 1700s I literally HAVE to have a laptop for college and it ain`t a mac. I don`t even care for computers outside of school work

um, my phone was $170 and it works great. So, you don`t spend that much to gain the tools. Unless it`s all about the prestige

I could probably easily go a month without a smartphone provided I didn`t have to travel

We have to find alternate ways to live - got to get rid of these CIA spy machines. Amish makes so much more sense now.

I had someone calling to collect student loans tell me i was lying when i said i couldnt pay bc "you have a cell phone" I had just got a room after being homeless was still on a family plan bc i have epilepsy and might need to contact help.

Theyre not buying iphones. They`re at best leasing them...as is advertising for every major carrier offering free iphone w/2 year contract... the BS gaslighting never ends. Next they`ll claim "flat screen" tvs cost at minimum thousands of dollars as if Walmart ceased to exist

We were homeless a couple of years ago and having phone is the only way we could do find the shelter to take us in. All local shelters were full in GA and mom found 1 shelter in New Mexico with space. Its also needed to get a job & find other emergency services. necessity

Lets also be aware that iPhone can be used like the word Kleenex. Just cause it looks like a tissue, doesn`t mean it`s a Kleenex. It`s likely to be a Great Value!

another dog-whistle racist point i always hear thrown around is owning a "flat-screen tv" ... as opposed to what? that`s all anyone can buy anywhere for the last 15 years

I recently had to replace an old cellphone bc it wasn`t compatible with the tech upgrade and would lose important calls. That and you can`t literally do anything nowadays without a laptop: housing, jobs, and even medical appointments cannot be done without internet access.

I could easily survive without a phone or PC/laptop. Just give me food, shelter, optional clothing and peace of mind. I`d be alright with that.

I am tired of hearing that argument from the right

I own a lot of expensive stuff that I bought at clearance prices etc. If you looked at me, youd say But how can you afford this or that? Lower income people are the most resourceful people you can find. And if they carry an iPhone, you better believe it will last them years.

My mom is 89 and does NOT have a smart phone and does not text, but everyone expects her to have one and be able to receive texts: Credit card companies, cell phone companies, banks, etc. In this day and age, it is difficult to be without one.

I feel seen. Internet access and cellular phone usage should be utilities and regulated as such.

In my case the iPhone was the brand that was being pushed for a promo when my family switched mobile carriers

As a poor person, there is a gigantic difference between a smart phone and an iphone. No poor person needs a damn iphone.

Even the Amish have phones Cause its necessary to live and work in this society

I went 6 years without a phone and still dont have a laptop its a luxury thanks for proving my point

Also if you sign up for a contract with a phone company they often give you a cheaper phone OR you can buy an old iphone for a couple hundred dollars - cant assume they spent full $ on a brand new one or it wasnt gifted to them. Ppl are so petty/small minded sometimes. Really

IPhone 12 is a luxury, not a necessity. Poor people having technology is one thing, having the most up to date and most expensive is another.

Many ppl sadly cant think past their own lives

Instead ask them why they are being judgemental about someone they know nothing about. It helps no one to be so critical.

Some people CAN afford $100 a month ($15 to rent to buy) iPhone and rest for service. Its the housing prices and pay that keeps people down. Not iPhones.

Imagine getting through any school today without a smartphone or laptop. Would stand no chance.

I laugh when people say you can survive without a phone. Yeah, you can but, good luck trying to make a living when work cant reach you. Or getting a job when theres no transportation options outside the metro area.

Define survive, Bc Im sure I will still be alive without my phone for a month.

You do know there is a difference between an iphone and just another smart phone right? Iphones are absolutely luxuries, you can get smart phones for much less than them.

I don`t believe in "buying" something if it isn`t from my own bank. If its on a credit card that not your money. Everything I own I bought with cash.

That`s right! On point.

Start with the nearly-always-heavily-debt laden $25K +++ motor vehicle they were duped and socially pressured into purchasing.

I can`t tell you how many iPhones and "luxury" electronic devices my sister bought off friends when her older phones broke or no longer worked well enough. Now that she finally has a decent job, she keeps a small savings for those expensive but necessary replacements.

A smartphone is not a luxury, an iPhone is. You`re paying for the brand.

I dont know jerk off if I could barely feed my kids I probably wouldnt spend $1000 on the phone

I could survive without an iPhone. There are far cheaper options around that can do the same things.

Serious question: why would it be anyone else`s business who has a phone or laptop? It is near impossible to navigate the world these days without them. We don`t know other people`s lives and stories.

i`ve survived 21 years without an iphone

Poverty, not the 1700s - excellent

I`m disabled and can find no work environment I can function in. I can have some tech devices so I can play games and destress, or I can have nothing to do whatsoever and instead plan what should be done to the society responsible for ruining my life. Hmm. Decisions...

A laptop is fine, assuming its used for productive purposes, which is not the case 95% of the time. And no one needs an iPhone, let alone spending $1000 on a new one. Thats bull.

My mom bought me my first iPhone. The iPhone 6 when it first came out and I had it until a year ago cracked and all cause I couldnt afford my own phone. And paid the cheapest bill I could find. Thats how.

And iPhones can be sold with monthly payments, and you can get them used.... I got an iPhone 5 in 2016 for I think $300? With monthly payments for 2 years. My phone bill was $60 a month, I think $15 of it was for the phone.

Plus a lot of that stuff is the model from 3-5 years ago and maybe they werent as poor back then.

A good working smart phone is essential to so many things in life.

because there are alternative options for much less.

And implicit in that kind of thought it - "they shouldn`t have ANYTHING at all."

Or family could be paying for it too. Me and my half sister lived in different states from my dad for years, dad has all three of us on the same account to make sure we can keep in touch. Lifesaving when my roommates kicked me out during a mental health crisis.

You can get an IPhone for 20 a month with a cellphone plan

Mobile, gadgets, Wifi excess camera quality... All are modern world divider of poor and rich for `a lot` . Time changes and so the ways to discriminate.

One word: handmedowns They have them, doesn`t mean they bought them

I think your missing the point. New iPhone is $1000 there are cheaper phones on the market that can accomplish the same thing.

"You`re poor? How are you even alive?! You must be able to afford food, you liar."

I`m poor and I have a $100. Android. Works just a well as a iphone.

I am NOT gonna ridicule them but will point out I survived without an iPhone until last year and computer for 10 years. I also dont have much of a life.

The rate of transfer of information(TOI) is directly proportional to the intelligence. People can be smart without iPhones, internet, etc, but they are at a clear disadvantage. Also, it is proportional to the intelligence of the human race. The only reason Dolphins are 2nd is TOI

By the way this is a useful place to buy cheap computers and cheap UNLIMITED internet if you are below poverty level. If you think a $1000+ spent on a phone are not a luxury, good for you. For many people paying that much for an Iphone would mean not put food on their table. Eat and have a roof over our head are not supposed to be luxuries. $1000+ on a phone IS A LUXURY I think the US should reserve a part of the 5G spectrum and use it as a welfare cell provider. They could limit each line to 5mbps to save cost, and also provide low cost devices and also ask Apple, and others to allow unlocks for devices if a person is on welfare

Those like flat screen tvs have become super affordable too.

A used iPhone 8 is ~ $175. That`s if they`re even using an iPhone -- Androids are obviously much cheaper. The sort of person you`re talking about always assumes a low-income person is using the most expensive version available of the thing they shouldn`t be allowed to have.

"If you`re so smart, how do you not know how to look for deals on used iPhones on Craigslist?" It`s like the people who criticize the lower income brackets could not survive in those same brackets because they don`t know how to "be poor."

Tracphones have iPhones for under $100. This attitude stems from people not wanting those they believe to be beneath them to have the same items they have. It somehow takes away from their self image "status"
