If you`re looking for a period app replacement check
If youre looking for a period app replacement check out these iOS - health app, encrypted iOS - Spot On - skip account creation, locally stored. Provides information for safe abortions and reproductive health. Android - Drip - locally stored, open source, password protected

I obviously don`t use it but there is menstrual cycle tracking in the Fitbit app.

Gonna see some of this tonight, but it looks much more like they`re using Firebase for data storage. Specifically Firestone, the Mongo-like product.

Stats from the same article: As such, mobile developers often install Firebase, resulting in it being used in: ~84% of the Top 200 Android apps, and, ~47% of the Top 200 iOS apps.

GDPR just means you as the user have more control over your data (have the right to it), it doesn`t magically limit what data can be collected

I`d be interested in your opinion on fertility friend if you have time. it`s mostly used for TTC but no other app compares imo

I saw the EFF recommended Euki I think I saw you asking about alternatives a few days ago

Ooof . I "didn`t read passed the headline"d myself. Thank you for all your work in this space. I`m trying to engage with a bunch of it to help it stay seen. This is very important and you`re doing a great job! It`s such a shit thing for someone to need to be good at though :(

Just be careful with any that may provide information about abortive care. Depending on the state, that could end up being used as evidence. God I hate that this is a discussion we have to be having.

You may be able to benefit from GDPR. It`s highly unethical IMHO developing one application for Europe to comply with GDPR and one for the rest of the world that doesn`t comply.

That`s correct; Stardust uses Firebase as well. As does Flo. Firebase is a Google product that offers realtime database services. But you`re beholden to their privacy policies. Also, as with many GCP things, security is a little sketch.

And we`re going again tonight. I looked into Clue last night. For one thing they are collecting waaaay more data than they need to. Also, as with many of these apps, they use Firebase as a backend for data storage. I`d steer clear.

Hey, thanks for checking out our piece. We make some similar recs for apps and talk about how period trackers are used for a variety of purposes in more detail in our longer explainer, including what evidence was used for prev prosecutions, see This is an important issue I dont see enough people discussing. The way the FDA regulates software as contraception is ridiculous, especially when all of these apps look virtually identical to your average consumer.

What are your thoughts on Clue? That`s been my suggestion b/c it`s based in Germany (GDPR compliant) and their immediate response when the decision leaked seemed solid: the additional resources on abortion and healthcare access on spot on links to their website. Its not native in the app.

How is Euki? I`ve seen that mentioned on some privacy discussion threads.

On iOS, dont forget to be weary of iCloud backups. I think that stuff is end-to-end encrypted but Im not 100% sure.

If I may add, it *appears* that you can run Drip on an iOS device if you have access to a macOS computer and are comfortable running CLI commands: has also told me in a DM that they plan to release an official version hopefully in August. I 100% support your approach. Truly sharing in good-faith in hopes you`ll find it useful in continuing to give people good guidance.

Personally I wouldnt use Flo. It seems to be one of the most popular options however they have already had some run ins with the FTC Does Drip encrypt its data or just password-protect the app?

And Drip is available outside of the Play Store for anyone who doesn`t use the Play Store for app management: information Apple says they believe privacy is a human right, and I believe them because they don`t have monetary incentives to violate that privacy the way Google and other companies do.

Spot on information I aways expected another "government vs people" showdown on privacy like we had in the Clipper Initiative days. I did NOT expect it to be over period tracking and (coming soon) gay tracking.

Health App details (this is the one I have always used)
