- Is switching from an iPhone to a Samsung a good decision?
I want USB-C (actually TB3) on the iPhone ProSeptember 23, 2021, 8:52 pm I want USB-C (actually TB3) on the iPhone Pro badly, but Lightning made the iPhone 5 possible in 2012, 3 years before USB-C shipped, and I prefer a world where leaps forward arent stymied by EU myopia or USB Forum stasis. (Or pushed wireless faster, because Im Galactica) This will end up with Apple doing what they want and EU phones coming with a cable adapter the horse also came before the car Apple supports new ports for ~10yrs for the 3rd party ecosystem: iPod connector 03-12, Magsafe 06-15, Firewire 99-12. We`re coming up on a decade for Lightning, and wireless charging is clearly not a replacement, so could be time for USB-C. But it`s such a lateral move for most. I want a world where I can charge my iPhone after spending the night at someone`s flat who owns a Samsung. The morning transit ride back home with a dead iPhone is not pleasant. I think youre miss understand eu directives, there will be a place in the legislation for migration to new standards, but those standards must be agreed by the USB body, this is good now that the market has matured. Lightning happened so Apple could keep making $$ after 30pin Maybe the EU chairperson is finding it hard to plug a lightning cable in her iPhone... Love the BSG reference. EUs myopia only helps competitors it will NOt solve electronic waste not until a proper communication is done and working with Apple and their customers for recycling cables which a huge amount are out there per user. What would stop Apple from making a new pro line of phones or iPads someday that might have a faster connector while keeping the lineup with the standard. Eventually usbc is not gonna be fast enough for anybody Im guessing. Blue Check Disorder strikes again And it`s been 10 years since then. Right now Apple and Lightning is what`s myopic, static, and stymieing. Bring on the USB-C that is infinitely more useful and aligned with the rest of their own ecosystem than lightning or the MagSafe horsepoop. EU = full of failed product managers Nothing stopped them from using microUSB except their desire to control the ecosystem and continue to charge licensing fees. And no, the convenience thing doesn`t fly- dual-sided microUSB was already a thing at that point. The problem is Apple won`t do it unless they are forced to. And I don`t mean by their customers... Well you have two choices: 1. Progress 2. No Progress Apple isn`t modernizing their chargers without force, so those are your two choices. Meanwhile, I`ll continue to enjoy the vastly superior USB-C on my Samsung while you all squander at the minutest of change. Doesn`t the EU have better things to regulate? Do you expect anyone to switch to a propriety standard again? I think innovation comes from the USB consortium, and leaps aren`t required for phone connectivity anymore. Haha...Wow. My wife`s rental, a 2020 VW Jetta, has 2x USB-C ports. I was very surprised. I don`t have a USB-C on my PC, but the next one I build will have it. I may even get a PCI-E card to add USB-C if I end up needing it. Shrug. Apple sells 1TB phone throw you with lightning port? They must be high But is this for the power supply, the cable doesnt matter so much. Its the chargers which are not usb c? Lightning was to sell hardware, not because of technical issues One could argue that having different cables for different devices also angers mainstream customers :) I like USB-C but forcing design is so weird I don`t want a world where tens of thousands of chargers end up as electronic waste every year because of a lack of interoperability. All phone networks use the same protocols. You could argue that hampers innovation. In practise it`s just common sense economies of scale. Consider the timing. Do you think the EU commission would have come out with this proposal to make it law, had Apple modernised iPhone 13 with USB-C? Apple are clearly to blame as they are dragging their heels and still shipping out millions of lightning cables. Anything would be better than lightening USB-C never; give me portless on all Apple products. Use MagSafe to transfer data the magnetic connection allows for high speed data transfer. Stasis isn`t exactly the only problem with USB-IF. There`s the constant renaming of standards as well as cables that look the same but function differently. There need to be some serious improvements on the branding side. Guess what ports macbooks have been using for a while? In true Apple fashion, you should want USB-C since Apple often is years behind with new technology and finally implements a similar or relatable technology once it`s matured. And what will happend if they just ignore it? They will ban apple devices from apl european countries? True: The iPhone should have USB-C Also true: Product design by regulatory agencies is a bad thing. While I would love for Apple to go USB-C, I hate the government forcing it. A company should decide on how they build their own products I wish we lived in a world where market forces forced them to improve. Unfortunately Apple doesn`t really have a competitor If apple would have launched USB-C with the iphone 13, I would have preordered it ASAP. But now I`m just going to wait another year. You are gonna take USB-C and you are going to love it. I hope wireless iPhones are a red herring. My two year old Equinox has wired CarPlay, which I like because I want to charge while I drive anyway. A switch to a wireless iPhone kills both of my preferred features. Id rather have an USB-C iPhone as my car does have it. Why just on iPhone PRO. USB C is not a pro feature, it should be available across the entire iPhone lineup for God sakes! By your own math, Apple hasnt taken a leap forward on connectors in nine years. Whos been stymying them this whole time? If apple wanted to drop the port completely, does that not mean they become non-compliant relying on MagSafe? Its just common sense. "Lightning made the iPhone 5 possible in 2012" iPhone 5 could have easily used the micro USB standard They`re doing this - mainly cos they`re afraid of totally cordless charging... Given that this wont apply to at least the next three iPhones itll be all wireless by then anyway? Might as well aim for TB4 |
