Mac/PC Users: What are MacOS features you wish Windows
Mac/PC Users: What are MacOS features you wish Windows had?

Native iMessage , FaceTime Apps and procreate

a system that automatically makes your background the amogus

spotlight (windows search is garb , and power toys is slightly better , I wish all powertoys features are added) , preview psd(and other formats) , nice keyboard shortcuts (entre for rename) ...

A half-decent audio stack

Looking through these comments and amazed I havent seen imessage yet..

gaming capabilities of course

Airdrop. Straight up. I dont want to use cloud services or having to connect my phone with a cable to send a screenshot/file/whatever in between my phone and my computer or device. Specially since any other thing leaves an annoying paper trail.

Airdrop would be amazing

A good video editor so we can chuck adobe in the bin

Not having to deal with drivers

Better MIDI and audio drivers

A reasonably good package manager.

No ads in your operating system would be a start.

Consistent AppleID equivalent. Microsoft is close, but office and Xbox and windows all can behave differently. Unified settings location. Doesnt take long to get to the naked underbelly of Windows 10. PDF management. Easy backup like time machine.

Functional spotlight search

Umm, nothing really comes to mind. a conformant file layout.

Clipboard history, not just for what you copied right now, but also later

- A proper file explorer and a good search - Copy/Paste among devices, iMessages and Airdrop - Fresh installation and solving issues through drivers/kernel/configuration not to exist. - Handling video codecs natively in the OS - Final Cut Pro!

The exit, full screen, and minimize buttons on the left side.

I don`t like walled gardens, but if youre in the ecosystem everything just works together. Windows has "Your Phone" but at least in my experience, it has never been anywhere near as good

Unix based with bash shell

All the usual stuff Air drop, consistent theming/universal dark mode, better optimization, all the cross device stuff Tbh I`d just like it if Apple would pull its head out of its butt and let me use my computer how I want to, because I don`t see windows ever being that polished

Updates that dont scramble my settings.

airdrop from any device

I want good optimization of music production. There is a good damn reason producers prefer Mac.

The screenshot / spinning tool can be seamless and intuitive like the Macs. Quick Look. Ability to copy something from my Mac and paste to my iPhone and vice versa. Be able to full screen application like on a mac. Thats all I can think of.

Raise your hand to add LTT on Discord emotes?

not having to do a 3 hour update every 2 days because they wanted to change the logo of microsoft edge

The ability to easily upgrade components. Sarcasm

Small marketshare. It would be awesome if Linux would replace Windows as mainstream os.

CTRL F and also facetime and imessage are pretty seamless

1. Spacebar to preview in File Explorer! 2. The Office productivity suite should come with Windows. At least make a lite version like Office online and make it available offline. 3. Make virtual desktops more like Spaces

same multi deskto management in multiple screens

A better Cloud files managment. iCloud is far better than OneDrive .

It`s easier to think of examples in the other direction. But if I had to pick one, I`d go with files permission (which is actually Unix`s merit). And homebrew... But that`s not MacOS either. Boy, this is hard!

A lot of them are showing up in windows 11 I have seen

The ability to update when it`s convenient for me.

Timeline. I.e.i deleted something or I was working on something and computer crashed so go back

Spaces, Expose, Tabs for File Explorer, Color coded labels, Spotlight, Airplay

I think Mac stuff has a nice design. This gives a new feeling experience in comparison to Windows whenever I use a Mac. Windows is better though.

A decent window manager.

To not use 5gb of memory sat idle

Unix... PowerShell 7 is nice.. but it will never be unix..

I wish it was a Unix-based operating system.

Finders column view and finder merge tabs features.

WSL is a step in the right direction, but I`d like to have the all of the features of Terminal in Windows.

Being able to uninstall just by dragging to the trash

AirDrop 100% I love the idea of being able to share files from my computer to my phone without a separate program.

Way better trackpad integration

I like being able to hit cmd and backspace to delete a whole line or cmd + shift + arrow to highlight lines

I wish Windows can remove Bing

Time machine and spotlight

The finger gestures, without a doubt. I got a MacBook Pro for cheap but couldn`t imagine moving to a windows laptop and missing out on those gestures

Dark mode across even the oldest legacy apps

An actually good searchbar

package manager like apt yum and homebrew

id rather they innovate than copy

the reverse way around: more support for software (razer synapse 3, etc.) and games

I wish I had repeated emails from Microsoft telling me I should subscribe to Xbox Game Pass like Apple tells me with Apple Music and Apple Arcade, for simply signing into the Windows Store app.

Better exiting of full screen without actually exiting full screen

iMessage and FaceTime equivalent. Woven right into the standard software. Skype does not count.

System wide dark theme and consistent theme throughout the entire os, not this outdated xp theme for the legacy apps

Spotlight >>>> Windows Search. that`s it

The feature that I like the most in Mac OS and can`t be found on Windows is that Mac OS is not Windows.

Honestly, the install process for some applications is stupidly complicated. Tbh that`s not really Microsofts fault but if they could introduce some sort of broad install standard (to still allow custom installations) that would be awesome in my opinion.

I dont use macOS, but I feel like having airdrop would make windows painful to use if I did. So something similar to airdrop

I wish it integrates better with peripherals ya know?? Like apple does but it`s kinda unfair because apple makes everything and all of `em just integrates like heaven with eachother...

MacOS has some fantastic out-of-the-box disk utility features. I wish Windowss worked as well. Also their built-in apps arent garbage, for the most part.

Spotlight. Windows Search is so botched

I wanted to say centered taskbar a few month ago but I`ll just tuck that idea away

Tabs in all apps (finder, 3rd party apps with no update to apps needed), tags, search, system wide pip video, sms and phone calls, copying text from photos, markup in pdfs, Apple Pay, tracking prevention, auto dark mode(also in apps), memory compression, stacks, system wide preview Better search. More compartmentalized programms not having to edit a registry. Honestly windows would do well with a reboot. Get rid of the registry and design around what the user wants and what is easiest to maintain. Then add backwards compatibility later.

Better handling of Audio. macOS does what Windows just cant. Like without any noticable latency you can just passthrough a microphone to a connected pair of headphones which is freaking awesome

Freedom from the feeling that even after you uninstall a program, its still left a ton of junk all over your file system and the registry.

A working search bar.

Cross device clipboard, Airdrop, iMessage, tabbed file browser, spotlight (because windows search doesnt work), and TimeMachine. Still cant figure out why they cant do the last three

laptops with good touchpads.

Not pushing Edge in people`s faces

The eco system, your texts come up on your computer, took a photo on your photo, boom its on your laptop, set a reminder or alarm on your laptop, bam they go off on your phone. Now with that said I would never buy a windows phone if the os looked liked they did the last time

I`m not a macuser but.... in Windows.. control panel is not replaced, just hidden but I`m still relying on it, settings doesn`t exist in the new settings always, new settings are but many important are in the old. Consistency is what I`d like, and apple does that.

i love mac cuz theres no bloatware on it like windows

File system, terminal, smaller resource overhead

Nothing. Mac is waste of money and anyone who buys mac or anything related to apple basically doesn`t even care about their money/they probably dont know things about any tech so just stay away from apple scam lmao.

I mostly just want the Apple ecosystem, especially since now the clipboard is shared across devices, so I could copy one thing on my iPad/iPhone and then paste it on my Mac

The Preview application

Imessage/FaceTime and icloud that actually works

Press to preview files for sure

A consistent UI. Lack of GUI for complex needs. We dont need windows 2000s guis for stuff just give me a bash terminal.

The same trackpad gestures as MacOS, official iMessage support, holding a key shows a popup with accented version of that character (like the mobile keyboards), airdrop , thats about it?

Hot corners. I know there are programs to do it, but I just really like hot corners on mac

too much to the point that i just use macOS for everything and have a PC only for gaming. tbh at this stage it`s much easier for mac to fix that part than it is for windows to become mac.

Build in screen recording, windows needs better print screen functions, Mac has much better terminal, system updates, touch pad gestures, icloud works much better than onedrive. Windows has inconsistent load times and you often have no idea what it`s actually doing.

The ability to develop iOS app on windows

Mac search options are 10 times better what you get on Windows

Hotkey to screenshot and when you shake the mouse cursor it becomes a giant arrow. Oh, and fingerprint or password to confirm installing a new app.

-Magic Trackpad gesture support -Good native PDF markup/signing -Organised settings that dont pass you off to 20 year old legacy interfaces

Biggest one for me would be airdrop

As someone who types Germany with an US lay-out - that thing where you hold a key and it shows all the possible variations with dots on top of the letter and stuff

Change from "features" to "software"

Able to run crysis 3 remastered. oh wait?

It would be nice if I could have that update feature, where it asks you, if you want to update. And if you say no, it doesnt make it on its own, killing all my apps vms and stuff, and unsaved work. Especially when I just have to poop and it only idled 15 mins.

Using Headphones with integrated microphone as headset and that it works properly

Integrated UNIX like terminal instead of a subsystem

iMessage for windows so then I dont have to carry an iPhone anymore because a family

Universal Clipboard- its so annoying when I copy a link on my phone and then I try to paste it and then I realize Im using my pc and not my mac. Airdrop pretty much the same. iMessage ofc would be nice. Automatic updates that arent a half baked feature I want to disable

As a Linux user i enjoyed all the cool features before they were cool ! 1. When you turn a Macbook off it doesn`t constantly drain battery. My last Asus laptop drains battery even when fully shut down and it drives me crazy. 2. Air Drop. It`s just so convenient for transferring files when you don`t have access to WiFi.

the compatibility between iphones, ipads and the mac. that`s really the only reason that i haven`t switched to windows to save money

A Native Screen Recording App. Bandicam Sucks

Migration Assistant and Time Machine

iMessage, AirDrop, and Logic (music software)

The ecosystemwish Microsoft wouldve actually tried w/ Windows Phone.

Ability to set multiple ethernet cards in priority via drag and drop instead of the numeric nonesense Windows makes you do

Spotlight Files column view + tabs Handoff/Continuity AIRDROP UI Consistency Smaller notifications on the top right of the screen Press space to preview Trackpad/Magic Mouse-like controls Simpler (and more complete) Screen Capture feature

Shared clipboard. I can select and copy on Mac and paste to iPhone or iPad for example. Or vice versa

Knowing that I dont want to run a query when I try to save a file with a ?

Windows needs a feature to skip updates before taking my exam

On Windows: Quicklook, the FOSS Quicklook app does 80% of what Quicklook on macOS does but it`s just not as deeply integrated into the OS and isn`t as fast which is exactly why Quicklook is so amazing. +1 for Unix style file paths.

The ability to restart and restore application state. Leave my focus alone and just bounce a dock icon when an app needs attention.

3 finger gestures, real screen recorder (not the xbox game bar), consistent UI, smooth animations, better built-in video editor (as well as photo and audio editor), faster time when searching for files, better scaling in some apps and less windows updates

final cut and imovie lol

1: UNIX-style file paths ("/" instead of "", and "/" is root) 2: Native bash terminal by default 3: Better Docker support

Windows user here: I honestly like the terminal commands both Mac and Linux have. They make since, and most programers use them

Shortcut for screenshots, far better default notepad which also syncs to my phone, far better and more powerful search function, much better standby time on laptops
