App notifications on iOS are being increasingly abused for advertising. please do something about this.

In Android, for every app, there are categories for notifications and you can disable them category wise. I believe something similar will be there in iOS too. Separating communication is a long art I`m still perfecting. 10 minute emails and mass unsub services help a bit. I have a whole system to clean my inbox in 5 minutes after vacation. Also, i think some phones and sites notifiy you to turn on notifications.

Perfect. And devs control the setting per notification. Everyone wins!

Agreed. There`s so much noise.

Our marketing team had this discussion a decade ago about frequency of emails. Some argue that users can just ignore or unsubscribe. True, but i know what you mean. I miss important notifications because of the saturation of this type of pushing.

Yeah. Its a quick read. Also a decent audiobook.

Alternative dev perspective: I think having an optional API here makes the most sense. Having devs reinvent the wheel every time they want categorical notifications doesnt make sense. That said, Apple shouldnt control whats high priority directly, just give the tools to devs.

FYI, both apps have a settings section for notifications and allow you you to disable notifications for offers

How will you know you have no interest in if you don`t even know it exists?

Worth reading this book if you haven`t: But Im constantly seeing ad-notifications now from the likes of Uber and Grubhub.

Since the example you mentioned was opting out of some Netflix notifications but keeping some Uber notifications, I just want to check for good measure: You do know you can opt out of notifications per app?

But why do you have notifications on for Netflix? This is exactly the kind of thing Id expect to get as a notification from Netflix

You could reach out to them and let them know how you feel. If every one of our players hit up Oculus every time we had a bug or issue Id be pretty upset. If youre willing to send this tweet but not willing to tag them or email them then you are part of the problem IMO.

If you allow notifications for anything other than reminders, texts and calls you are a digital barbarian.

Apple explicitly made the change to allow them. After being caught abusing push notifications themselves, instead of improving things they let everyone do it.

I don`t need any notifications from Netflix? Same with Spotify and many others

A lot of apps do because pushes are awesome for engagement and having notifications turned off is a big loss.

Not really. How is Apple benefiting?

And Apple has to enforce it? Its too subjective. This is 100% on Netflix. If they abuse pushes you turn them off. Why do you have notifications on for Netflix?

@Rengle820 This is as bad as the post office making $$$ on all the spam that gets sent to your mailbox with no incentive to stop it.

What does that have to do with Apple? Should Apple screen every push notifications? A push notification approval process?

@Rengle820 If the app itself doesnt let you opt-out of advertising notifications then your only option is to silence it completely, which hinders the notifications that you actually want or need (ie: Uber pickup notifications).

App notification settings. Its not Apples job to determine what notifications an app sends.

Isnt giving users control enough? You simply just swipe the notification to the left and manage the notification.
